Embrace the Transition: Seasonal Design Tips for Your Home This August

As summer begins to wind down and the first hints of autumn approach, I begin to change out some elements within my own home. Embracing the seasonal transition brings a renewed sense of warmth and comfort to your living spaces. Here are some expert design tips from Ashley Morgan Interiors, LLC, to help you seamlessly blend summer’s vibrancy with autumn’s coziness.

1. Layering with Light Textures

Across Kentucky and Tennessee, you never really know what the temps will be (especially this year), making it an ideal time to introduce layered textures into your home. I'll opt for light, breathable fabrics like linen or cotton for throws and pillows, which provide comfort without overwhelming the space. Layering different textures adds depth and visual interest while maintaining that relaxed, airy feel.

2. Updating the Color Palette

Transitioning your color palette is a subtle yet impactful way to reflect the changing seasons. While summer calls for bright and bold hues, August is the perfect time to incorporate softer, muted tones. Think earthy shades like terracotta, sage green, and warm taupe. These colors evoke a sense of calm and harmony, bridging the gap between summer’s brightness and autumn’s warmth. And with the current trend toward more dark, "moody" colors, it's the perfect time to discern just how much tolerance you have for such colors.

3. Incorporating Natural Elements

Nature-inspired decor continues to be a timeless trend. I'll bring the outdoors in by incorporating natural elements such as wood, stone, and greenery. I'll even add a new statement piece like a wooden coffee table or a stone vase to fill with the flowers I pick up at the farmer's market. Indoor plants not only enhance your home’s aesthetic but also improve air quality, creating a fresh and inviting atmosphere.

4. Refresh the Entryway

The entryway sets the tone for the entire home. I'll give it a seasonal update by swapping out summer accessories for autumn accents. A stylish doormat (nothing with words on it!), a chic umbrella stand, and a cozy bench with plush cushions can make your entryway both functional and welcoming. Adding a touch of greenery, such as a potted plant or a fresh wreath, can also make a significant impact.

5. Enhancing the Outdoor Spaces

August still offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy our outdoor spaces. Update the patio or deck with comfortable seating, outdoor rugs, and ambient lighting to create a cozy retreat - definitely one my favorite spots in the whole house! Consider adding a fire pit or an outdoor heater to extend the usability of your outdoor areas into the cooler months. Stylish lanterns and string lights can enhance the ambiance, making your outdoor space perfect for those fall evenings.

6. Focus on Cozy Accents

As the evenings start to cool, incorporating cozy accents into living spaces can make you never want to leave home. Soft throws, plush pillows, and warm rugs can instantly make a home feel more inviting. Opting for rich fabrics like velvet or wool in deep, autumn colors create a sense of luxury and comfort. These small additions can make a big difference in how any home feels.

7. Transition Table Settings

Updating table settings is an easy way to embrace the seasonal change. Switch out bright, summery centerpieces or linen napkins for pieces in earthy tones and natural materials. Using woven placemats, ceramic dishes, and linen napkins creates a sophisticated yet casual look. Adding a centerpiece with seasonal flowers or a bowl of fresh, late-summer fruits completes the look.

August is the perfect time to start preparing our homes for the upcoming seasonal changes. By incorporating the same tools I use as I style homes, you can create a space that beautifully balances the lingering warmth of summer with the cozy anticipation of autumn.
