What Is Interior Design, Really?

If you ask ten people what an interior designer does, you'll likely hear ten different answers. Some imagine choosing paint colors and pillows. Others picture a fast paced television makeover completed over a weekend. Social media has introduced a new generation of self proclaimed design experts who seem to transform spaces overnight with little more than instinct and a camera. While these portrayals are entertaining, they often leave the public with an incomplete understanding of what interior design truly is. At Ashley Morgan Interiors, we believe one of the most valuable conversations we can have with prospective clients is explaining the depth, education, and expertise behind the profession.
I often reflects on my own introduction to interior design. Entering an accredited interior design program in college, I admit I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Like many people, I assumed the profession centered primarily on creating beautiful spaces. Instead, I quickly discovered a discipline grounded in technical knowledge, problem solving, and the responsibility of designing environments that support the health, safety, and wellbeing of the people who use them. Decades later, that misunderstanding still exists because most people never have the opportunity to work with a professional interior designer. Their understanding is often shaped by television personalities, online influencers, or individuals who discovered they had an eye for decorating and decided to start a business.
Professional interior design extends far beyond selecting furnishings and finishes. Whether working in residential or commercial design, interior designers receive education that overlaps with many aspects of architecture and the built environment. Coursework includes occupancy classifications, life safety requirements, fire codes, building standards, construction methods, and material performance. Designers also study the elements and principles of design, including scale, balance, proportion, rhythm, and harmony, while learning how sustainability, ergonomics, accessibility, universal design, temperature, and visual comfort all contribute to the way people experience a space. Every design decision carries both an aesthetic and a functional responsibility. The result is an environment that is not only beautiful, but thoughtfully planned to support the people who live, work, and gather within it.
That depth of knowledge directly influences the way we approach every project at Ashley Morgan Interiors. Every recommendation is carefully considered within the larger context of how a home functions, how materials will perform over time, and how each space will serve our clients for years to come. While beautiful finishes are certainly part of the process, they represent only one layer of a much larger body of work. Space planning, construction coordination, lighting, material specifications, custom detailing, and countless behind the scenes decisions all contribute to the finished result. Much of what makes a project successful is never obvious at first glance, yet it is precisely this thoughtful planning that allows a home to function effortlessly long after installation day.
Hiring an interior designer is a significant investment, and it deserves thoughtful consideration. Beyond reviewing a portfolio, it's important to understand a firm's education, professional experience, design process, and the qualifications that prepare them to guide such an important investment in your h
ome. At Ashley Morgan Interiors, we believe exceptional design is built on knowledge just as much as creativity, and our clients benefit from both throughout every stage of the project. If you're considering working with a professional interior designer and would like to learn more about our approach, we invite you to submit an inquiry through our website to schedule a consultation with our team.
