The Process of Designing a Custom Furniture Piece

Custom furniture is one of the most exciting parts of interior design. It allows us to take an idea — something that perfectly fits a client’s space, lifestyle, and personality — and bring it to life in a way that no off-the-shelf piece ever could. At Ashley Morgan Interiors, we love guiding clients through this journey, from the first sketch to the final installation. Here’s what the process looks like:
1. Discovery & Inspiration
Every custom piece begins with a conversation. We start by listening — learning about how the client lives, what they need, and what inspires them. Sometimes it’s about solving a practical challenge (a sofa that fits a tricky room layout), while other times it’s about creating something truly one-of-a-kind to be the centerpiece of a space. Inspiration can come from anywhere: architecture, travel, fashion, or even a cherished heirloom.
2. Concept Development
Next comes the design vision. We create sketches, mood boards, and digital renderings to explore different forms, proportions, and finishes. This stage is about collaboration — ensuring the piece reflects the client’s aesthetic while complementing the larger design of the room.
3. Technical Drawings & Specifications
Once the concept is approved, we move into precision. Our team produces detailed shop drawings that specify every measurement, material, and finish. These drawings are shared with trusted craftsmen or fabricators who will bring the piece to life. Every curve, seam, and joint is carefully considered.
4. Material Selection
This is where the tactile beauty of custom design comes in. We work closely with clients to select fabrics, woods, metals, and finishes. Do we want the warmth of walnut or the sleekness of lacquer? Should the upholstery be a performance fabric for durability or a silky velvet for luxury? Every detail is chosen intentionally.
5. Fabrication & Craftsmanship
The piece is then handed over to skilled artisans. This stage is where technical precision meets artistry. Depending on the complexity, fabrication can take weeks or even months. Throughout, we check in on progress, making sure the vision is being translated perfectly.
6. Delivery & Installation
Finally, the moment everyone waits for — installation day. Seeing a custom piece placed in its new home is always rewarding. It’s not just furniture; it’s a work of art that’s been designed and crafted with a specific space and client in mind. You might even say it feels like a member of the family at this point 😉
Why Custom?
Custom furniture isn’t about extravagance — it’s about fit, function, and personalization. A tailored sofa can transform how a family gathers. A custom dining table can become the centerpiece of holiday memories. These pieces are more than furnishings; they’re heirlooms in the making.
